Always Hire has a range of Dumpers available to hire for customers across Hawke’s Bay. You can choose to pick up from either our Napier or Hastings branch or ask us about delivery. If you want to know more about when a Dumper might be the right choice for a job or the benefits of hiring a Dumper, read on.
What does a Dumper do?
A Dumper is a piece of construction or roading equipment that is designed to move bulk material off-road, on construction sites, and where a standard tipper truck may be more challenged with the terrain. Dumpers have a body, also known as a skip or bin, that tips or opens for unloading. They are usually 4 wheel drive to allow for the rugged, uneven landscape of a construction site.
What features does a Dumper have?
Most Dumpers have the following features, making them a versatile machine for construction and roading work:
- Swivel tip: allowing you to dump the load on either side of the Dumper
- 4 wheel drive or tracked: so Dumpers can comfortably work off-road and on uneven ground
- High & low ratio drive: allowing Dumpers to tackle uneven terrain or steep slopes where road tip trucks can’t go.
How can I get a Dumper to my worksite?
Smaller Dumpers (1.5T-3T Dumpers) often come on their own trailer so can be towed by a suitably sized truck or ute. Bigger Dumpers (3.5T and larger) usually need to be transported by truck.
Note: with Dumpers the size in their name refers to the payload that the dumper can carry.

How much does it cost to hire a Dumper?
Hire costs for a Dumper in Hawke’s Bay with Allways Hire start at $154 for 4 hours (excluding GST and Insurance).
Most Dumpers feature a swivel tip – making it easier to tip in confined spaces and saving time by reducing the amount of manoeuvring required.

What jobs should I rent a Dumper for?
Dumpers are great for off-road work where you need to move material but a tipper truck couldn’t handle the conditions. Dumpers are designed for uneven terrain, and can often work in confined spaces or on an incline. Some models of Dumpers work better in certain conditions than others. For example the 1.5T Thwaites Swivel Dumper, which is available to hire in Hawke’s Bay from Allways Hire, has 4 wheel drive and is very compact which makes it great for working on hill sites where there is limited maneuverability or small construction sites.
The 4 wheel drive system on this 9T Thwaites dumper make it great for climbing over steep and uneven terrain.
